Unlike a human, who can only analyze aggregate variables, Google’s algorithm evaluates millions of combinations of contextual signals in the millisecond a user performs a search:

  • Exact location and time of day: Adjusts the bid based on temporal and geographic relevance.
  • Device and operating system: Detects whether the user is on an old mobile phone or a cutting-edge computer.
  • Search history and intent: Evaluates the probability of conversion based on the user’s recent behavior.
  • Browser language and social network: Analyzes the user’s technical context.

The 4 Key Smart Bidding Strategies

Depending on your business objective, you should configure your campaigns under one of the four main automated bidding strategies:

  1. Maximize Conversions: Seeks to obtain the highest possible volume of conversions (leads or sales) within your established daily budget. Ideal for the initial phases of a campaign.
  2. Target CPA (Target Cost Per Acquisition - tCPA): The algorithm adjusts bids to achieve the highest number of conversions at the average cost you have defined as a limit.
  3. Maximize Conversion Value: Prioritizes obtaining revenue (or assigned value) rather than the number of sales. This is the standard strategy for e-commerce with varied catalogs.
  4. Target ROAS (Target Return on Ad Spend - tROAS): Optimizes bids in real time to generate an average revenue return equal to the multiplier you have configured.

The Golden Rule: “Garbage In, Garbage Out”

Google Ads’ algorithm is an optimization engine that learns by imitation and correlation. If the data it receives is poor, its results will be poor. Therefore, to successfully “train” the algorithm, you must focus your efforts on the quality of conversion data.

1. Implement Enhanced Conversions

Due to privacy policies and the disappearance of third-party cookies, browsers block some standard pixels. Enhanced Conversions send encrypted customer data (such as SHA-256 hashed emails or phone numbers) from your server directly to Google at the time of purchase. This allows Google to reconcile conversions that would otherwise have been lost, giving the algorithm a complete view of actual performance to make better bidding decisions.

2. Move from Simple Conversions to Value-Based Conversions

If you have an e-commerce store, don’t just measure whether a user made a purchase or not (Simple Conversion). You must transmit the exact value of the shopping cart. 3. Use Conversion Value Rules

You can proactively guide the algorithm by applying value rules in the Google Ads interface. For example, if you know that customers in the Madrid region have a Customer Lifetime Value (LTV) that is 30% higher than the rest of the country, you can configure a rule to increase the reported value of those conversions by 30%. The algorithm will detect that these conversions “are worth more” and will bid more aggressively for similar users in that location.


The Danger of Setting Unrealistic tCPA and tROAS Targets

A recurring mistake when using Smart Bidding is setting overly ambitious targets in the hope of forcing Google to be efficient. For example, defining a tROAS of 600% when the account has historically had a ROAS of 300%.

What Happens When You Do This?

The algorithm will analyze the auctions and realize that it is unable to guarantee a 600% ROAS in most searches. As a consequence, to comply with your directive, it will drastically reduce auction participation and stop spending the budget, strangling your business’s sales volume.

The Correct Strategy:

  • Initial phase: Configure your campaign to Maximize Conversions or Maximize Conversion Value for at least 14 to 30 days to accumulate a minimum track record (at least 30-50 monthly conversions).
  • Transition phase: Switch to tCPA or tROAS by setting a target that is 10% more conservative than your real historical average. If your historical ROAS is 3.0 (300%), enter an initial tROAS of 2.7 (270%).
  • Scaling phase: Once the algorithm spends the budget stably within that target, gradually increase the tROAS (e.g., from 2.7 to 2.9) to refine efficiency without shocking the bidding system.
